"Fair is foul and foul is fair,
Hover through the fog and filthy air"--the words which strike the very keynote of the play is often mistaken to be spurious.Cunningham has to say that Shakespeare was too great to be starting a play like Macbeth with this short and necessary scene. The scene is a matter of great importance as it is because of the witches that the atmosphere of the play is set in the way it should be gloomy ,dark and evil. The audience begins to anticipate that something is going to happen which is very wrong.
We have to keep in mind that for the Elizabethan audience the witches were a reality,a thing of immense symbolic value , a prophecy of a sinister future. Inclusion of the scene was definitely made by Shakespeare himself as we find later in the play Macbeth repeating these words in a different way in order to describe the weather. This shows that the playwright is drawing a parallel between their nature.Or probably he is trying to raise a question in the mind of the audience that why is both the protagonist (who is said to be of noble character) saying something which has been said by the three witches who in turn look like the three weird sisters of the greek mythology. The question of the autorship of the first scene of Macbeth can ,thus ,be easily resolved.
